Principal’s Report – 26 June 2026

As we reach the end of another busy and rewarding term, it is an opportunity to reflect upon the many achievements and rewarding experiences that continue to shape our vibrant school community. Term 2 has once again provided our students with a vast array of opportunities that have strengthened their learning and their sense of connection and as such, they have continued to grow both academically and personally.

The last couple of weeks have seen our Senior School students complete Semester One examinations across all subject areas. Once again, I would like to acknowledge the maturity with which our students approached this period and commend them on their preparation and focus. Likewise, our Middle School students have been wrapping up assessments, with Year 9 students experiencing their first exam period at the College with English and Maths exams taking place last week. I congratulate them on their positive mindset and excellent adherence to exam processes and protocols; skills that will place them in good stead moving forward into their senior years of schooling and beyond.

Beyond the classroom, this term has been rich with a wide range of events and opportunities that allowed our students to explore their interests and talents. Our students have been involved in sporting events, drama performances, dance workshops, music concerts, leadership opportunities, STEM excursions, cultural celebrations and fundraising events. These experiences not only build confidence and connection but also highlight the diverse strengths and passions within our school community. It’s been inspiring to see students step up, support one another, and make the most of what our school has to offer.

I would also like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to our dedicated teaching and education support staff for their unwavering commitment to providing the best possible learning experiences for our students. I also extend a heartfelt thank you to our families for their continued support and partnership in nurturing the growth and development of our young people.

Please note – Term 3 commences on Monday 13 July.

Year 12 Formal

The Year 12 Formal was held last Thursday 18 June at The Grand on Princes Reception Centre in Mulgrave. Attended by over 300 students and 40 staff, the Year 12 formal is not only a right of passage for our senior students, it also provides a much needed opportunity to take a breather from the demanding routines of their final year and simply enjoy each other’s company.

The Formal is a highly anticipated events for our Year 12 students and one of the final milestones of their secondary schooling. This year’s event did not disappoint. It was a wonderful evening of celebration and a fitting end to the term for our Year 12 students who have finalised their Unit 3 studies and undertaken their first external exam for 2026 with the GAT taking place last week.

As is always the case at this event, our students were revelling in the opportunity to get dressed up and share this milestone in their final year with their peers and teachers.

A big thank you to the Senior School team and student leaders for all the work behind the scenes that made this event possible and particularly to Kate Barresi, our Senior School Secretary, who plays such a significant role in ensuring the success of the evening.

EDSC once again supporting the Big Freeze in 2025

East Doncaster Secondary College continued its tradition of hosting a Big Freeze event on Tuesday 23 June.  We are very proud to contribution to the fight to find a cure for Motor Neurone Disease.

It was great to see an impressive number of students and staff bravely accept the challenge and be drenched by buckets of ice to raise money for this great cause. Our Assistant Principal, Cameron Campbell, felt the cold more than most as he bravely withstood five buckets of ice and cold water being dumped on him all at once. What a great sport!

It has been wonderful to see so many in our school and wider community donate to the cause. We are currently sitting at $2853 raised from donations coming in in support of our MND team members. This is an outstanding achievement and shows the power of our community coming together. With donations also received through gold coin donations for our out of uniform day that accompanied this event and proceeds of a sausage sizzle generously supported by Rotary Manningham City, we were overjoyed to raise $7267.60 well over our initial goal. Donations remain open for those who would still like to contribute. Details can be found on Compass newsfeed. Sincere congratulations to all those involved and a heartfelt thank you to all that donated!

Winter Music Concerts

Our Winter Concert series are an absolute highlight of our College calendar. There is nothing quite like the power of music to elicit joy and bring people together and this year’s concerts have done just that. On Wednesday evening in our Performing Arts Centre, our instrumental music students and our Music staff delighted and thoroughly entertained us with the final two Winter Music Concerts in the series.

We were wowed on Wednesday evening by captivating duets, breathtaking solos and truly joyous ensembles. It is also incredible to see how significantly our groups have grown in numbers and talent. There were too many highlights on the evening to name all individually, but I am sure that every audience member left with a huge smile on their face after the closing performance of the Concert Band with their final performance, A Dua Lipa Duo, having everyone bopping in their seats. Our Music program continues to engage and impress. Congratulations to all students involved and much thanks to our Director of Instrumental Music Coordinator, Carl Williams, for the work he does with his team behind the scenes to make these concerts possible. I would also like to recognise our phenomenally talented Instrumental Music teachers who are so committed to their students and go above and beyond for their students to grow in skill and confidence.

A further thank you to our wonderful Parent and Friends Association who provided us with a wonderful array of sweet and savory treats between concerts. Their support of our College is greatly appreciated.

Cycle 3 student reports

A reminder that our College Cycle 3 reports will be published at the end of week 1, Term 3.

For students in the senior school, our Cycle 3 reports early next term will provide constructive feedback that informs their practices as they strive for a highly successful year and completion of their VCE examinations.

For all our students, I would like to reinforce that Cycle Reports provide an important opportunity to recognise and celebrate their achievement and also reflect upon how this informs their future learning goals.

Although the reports are archived for the duration of your child’s enrolment at our College, I would strongly advise that you download your own copy and save this to your home computer for your future use.

Planning ahead for Term 3

NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC Week falls during the school holidays (5 July – 12 July), EDSC will be celebrating during Term 3, Week 1.

We look forward to lunchtime celebrations on Tuesday 14 July in the Middle School courtyard, and a staff vs students ‘EDSC does Marngrook Footy’ game on Thursday 16 July.

National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. You can support and get to know your local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities through activities and events held across the country.

This year’s theme: 50 Years of Deadly. For five decades, NAIDOC Week has celebrated the voices of our communities steady, unapologetic and proud. Each year, its themes have called for truth, celebrated culture, honoured resistance, and reminded the nation of who we are.

Backstage Pass- Our school production is coming!

Our students have been hard at work getting ready for our 2026 Production Backstage Pass.

Written specifically for East Doncaster Secondary College, Backstage Pass follows five current superstars as they step into the spotlight at a glamorous red-carpet event. Behind the flashing cameras and cheering fans, we quickly discover that fame is not as effortless or as glamorous as it seems.

For many weeks, our cast, crew and staff have invested countless hours rehearsing, creating and collaborating to bring this performance to life.

Involvement in productions of this nature are incredibly valuable to the growth and development of our young people. With every week that passes, they develop increased confidence, strengthen their capacity to work within a team, communication skills, strengthen creativity and build resilience. All skills that extend well beyond the stage.

I encourage all members of our school community support our remarkable young people by purchasing tickets and attending what promises to be an entertaining and memorable event. Two shows only – Thursday 13 August & Friday 14 August. Don’t miss out!

Senior School Course Selection and Course Counselling in Term 3

Term 3 marks an important stage in the year for students in Years 9–11 as they begin considering future pathways and making decisions about their learning programs for the years ahead. I encourage students and families to engage with the information and supports that the College provides during this time.

We have upcoming Information Evenings for current year 9 and Year 10 students. These evenings will provide students and families with the opportunity to explore subject options, career aspirations and post-school pathways through a series of information evenings.

Year 10 2027 Information Evening: Thursday 23 July

Year 11 2027 Information Evening: Tuesday 28 July

Another key component of effectively transitioning our students into the senior school, is our course counselling process.

Course counselling is an incredibly valuable process in which members of the College leadership team conduct one-on-one discussions with our students about their future pathways into VCE and beyond. To enable this to occur, students in Years 9, 10 and 11 will have one or two days where they will learn from home.

  • Year 11: Thursday, July 30.
  • Year 10: Monday, August 3 and Tuesday, August 4.
  • Year 9A – 9H: Thursday, August 6.
  • Year 9I-9P: Friday, August 7.

On our upcoming course counselling days, students will learn from home by logging into Compass, where they will follow lesson plans provided by their teachers. Students will also have a scheduled online meeting with a course counsellor to discuss their pathways. Parents are encouraged to attend if they are available.

These days play a vital role in supporting students and families as they make important decisions about future pathways and subject selections. By dedicating time to one-on-one meetings, we are able to provide personalised guidance, answer questions, explore options and ensure that every student is equipped to make fully considered and well-informed choices. This investment in time helps us work in partnership with families to develop learning programs that best support each student’s interests, strengths and aspirations.

Tax Deductible Donations – End of Financial Year 30 June 2026

Each year, as the end of the financial year approaches, we ask our families and community members to consider giving a tax-deductible donation to the School’s Building Fund.

Making a tax-deductible donation to our Building Fund before June 30 is a great way to boost your tax return while making a lasting impact on our school.

Thanks to the generosity of our community in the past, money raised has been used across the school to build and improve our facilities and meet the demands of growing enrolments. This year, we have already used donated funds to build a new basketball court to cater for more students to be active during recess and lunch times.

In addition, Building Fund donations will be directed to expanding our Senior School study area to enable the larger cohorts of students to work individually and collaboratively, with space to hold exams and tutorials for our VCE students.

Please seriously consider donating to our Building Fund either personally, or from your business, or both!

Any voluntary donation over $2 is Tax Deductable. If you make a donation via Compass, Tax Receipts can be accessed immediately online.  Feel free to contact the office if you have any queries.

Student Enrolment Census Data Collection – Student Family Occupation

Every year the Department of Education conduct a Student Enrolment Census in August which helps determine the level of our school’s student-based funding.

To ensure that the College is able continue to provide quality programs and an efficient learning environment for our students it relies on being supported by Department funding. Student Family Occupation details are an important component used by the DE to formulate our correct level of funding. These details are originally collected on your child’s enrolment form but are often not up to date.

For this census to be accurate we ask that all family details are up to date, including parent occupation and occupation code, employer and all contact details. Please complete the data collection form, even if you believe your details have not changed, and return to the College Reception by Friday 17 July. For assistance with identifying what occupation code to use please refer to the attached document.

It is also vital that families maintain up to date contact information. If your details change, we ask that you please complete the Updated Details Form and return to Reception or via email to east.doncaster.sc@education.vic.gov.au . This form is published in each edition of the College Newsletter.

EDSC – Change of Details form/Student Enrolment form

August Census letter to parents 2026

Families will also shortly receive an automatically generated student enrolment form via email. We ask that you check the details are up to date. If any changes need to be made, please complete the form and return to Reception by Friday 17 July.

Thank you for your assistance. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries regarding this matter.

2026 Course Counselling

I wanted to take the opportunity to inform students, parents and carers that the start of Term 3 will see us starting our planning for next year. Students will be presented with many options and decisions regarding their studies for next year.

Learning from home during course counselling

Course counselling is an incredibly valuable process in which members of the College leadership team conduct one-on-one discussions with our students about their future pathways into VCE and beyond. To make this occur, students in Years 9, 10 and 11 will have one or two days where they learn from home in Term 3.

Year 11: Thursday, July 30.

Year 10: Monday, August 3 and Tuesday, August 4.

Year 9A – 9H: Thursday, August 6.

Middle School

It has been a wonderfully busy and productive term for our Middle School students. Student schedules have been filled with the College Athletics Carnival, Interschool sports, Music camp and concerts, subject-based and Wellbeing incursions, lunch time and after school clubs, the Jewish Museum of Australia excursion, the Dante Alighieri Poetry Recitation Competition, Year 9 City Experience, Production rehearsals, IDAHOBIT Day, and Year 9 Semester 1 Exams. All these activities have been enjoyed alongside their rich Term 2 teaching and learning program.

To round out the term this week, our “Out of Uniform Day” coincided with EDSC’s Big Freeze event. EDSC has a long-standing relationship with Fight MND and is committed to raising funds to help find a cure for this incurable neurodegenerative disease. We extend our gratitude to all students and staff who donated to the cause during our school-wide campaign this term, particularly those involved in the lunch time activities, including our Middle School Interact students who helped to run a sausage sizzle. Well done to all for contributing to this worthy cause.

Year 9 Exams and the ABCs of VCE Presentation

The Year 9 Semester 1 Exams took place last week, with students participating in English/EAL and Maths Exams. Students were extensively prepared for these exams by Year Level Coordinators and classroom teachers, and this certainly came through on the day. Students participated with maturity and confidence which was great to see. As communicated throughout the Semester, the efforts that Year 9 students make now will have an impact on their choices for next year, a process they will soon embark on with Course Information Sessions and Course Counselling in Term 3. In anticipation of course selection for 2027, on Tuesday 23 June, students attended “The ABCs of VCE” presentation. This was delivered by Assistant Principal of Senior School – Kate Leamont and Teaching and Learning Assistant Principal Brett Lamb. Students were informed about preparing for VCE in ways that involve developing positive and sustainable habits, and how the process of course selection and counselling is carried out at EDSC. Parents were also invited to come along to attend the same presentation yesterday evening as the first step in understanding their role in their child’s course selection. We encourage all Year 9 families to spend time these holidays carefully consulting the 2027 Course Handbooks before information evenings are held next term.

Incursions and Excursions

This term, students have been fortunate enough to participate in multiple incursions that support the school’s curriculum, providing practical and interesting ways to reinforce their learning. With a particular focus on student social and emotional growth, activities and workshops have been delivered to students, including the Year 7 Teenager Mashed incursion and the Year 7, 8 and 9 Brainstorm incursion. These incursions are performances and presentations that delve into the landscape of adolescence, aiming to support students as they navigate the many different circles in which they operate. Year 9 students also participated in what always describe as the best week of their Year 9 life – City Experience! This week is life-changing for many of our students, and we are very proud of how the Year 9 cohort have embraced this experience and conducted themselves in the city.

East Doncaster Secondary College students were also offered the opportunity to participate in the School Visits to Cultural Museums Project this term. This project aims to enhance student intercultural capability through participation in educational programs at cultural museums, proactively contributing to the prevention of racism and intolerance in our community. EDSC students was selected to participate in the project which provided free excursions to major cultural institutions, of which the Jewish Museum of Australia was offered to our school. We were delighted to send Year 7, 8 and 9 students to the museum along to this initiative which fosters cultural understanding as we do at EDSC, supporting our ongoing commitment to creating a culture of curiosity, care and compassion.

It has certainly been an eventful term! I hope all families have a restful and enjoyable time over the holidays.

Assistant Principal of Middle School

Cambodia Expedition 2027 – A Life-Changing Opportunity

EDSC is thrilled to announce an exciting new international opportunity for our middle and senior school students. In partnership with Camps International we will be offering students who will be in Years 10 and 11 in 2027 the chance to join a two-week expedition to Cambodia in September 2027.

An information session will be held on Wednesday 22 July 2026 at lunchtime in the JLC to provide students with further details regarding the program, including:

  • Program activities and educational outcomes
  • Travel arrangements and supervision
  • Estimated costs
  • Eligibility and application processes

Student Lunches

A reminder to parents that we are unable to deliver lunches to students during school time.  It is the student’s responsibility to come and collect their lunch if it has been dropped off at Reception. We will not accept fast food take-away or any hot (warm) food. Hot (or warm) food is not suitable to be left at Reception due to food safety regulations regarding temperature control.

Students will be notified by email if their lunch is to be collected at Reception. If lunch is not collected by the end of the day, it will not be kept.

As a part of being prepared for the school day, it is important that students remember to bring their lunch. If a student forgets to bring their lunch, food is available from the Student Wellbeing Centre or available to purchase from the Canteen.

PLEASE NOTE: Take-away food is not allowed at the College during school hours.  Under no circumstances are students to be ordering take-away food to be delivered to the College.

Uniform Reminder

The East Doncaster Secondary College Student Dress Code aims to foster a sense of community and belonging and encourages students to develop pride in their appearance, support East Doncaster Secondary College’s commitment to ensuring that our students feel equal and are dressed safely and appropriately for school activities. Our dress code also aims to reduce student competition on the basis of clothing and enhance the profile and identity of the school and its students within the wider community.

Recently, there has been a notable increase in items being worn to school that are not in line with the EDSC Student Dress Code. These items include branded and plain black tracksuit pants (mostly Elite Eleven), runners (mostly black Nike Air Force 1 and Nike Low Recraft Grade), branded socks (mostly white Nike), hoodies and large and oversized hoop earrings. Please see the visual attached to this newsletter for examples of these non-uniform items.

With the cooler months approaching, please be reminded of our uniform expectations particularly regarding layering for warmth. Students are not permitted to wear any of the listed items above to school or during school events.

Please note that whilst the pants/shorts/skirt are not required to have the EDSC logo, the expectation is that the STYLE, COLOUR and MATERIAL are a close match to those sold at PSW, our official unform supplier. If families

have any questions about this, they should contact Year Level Coordinators for advice prior to purchasing.

If tracksuit pants without the College logo are worn as part of the PE Uniform, they must not contain any visible branding. Only plain navy-blue tracksuit pants are acceptable. Black flare pants and leggings are not permitted to be worn at school.

Students are welcome to wear additional layers underneath their uniforms. These layers must be plain white, with no logos, and covered by the school shirt, jumper or jacket. These additional layers should not replace any official school uniform items. If students choose to remove an outer layer, any non-school items must also be removed and kept out of sight.

Other clothing accessories, religious or otherwise, should be plain black or navy, including scarves, hats and beanies. These items can be worn to and from school when it is particularly cold although are not to be worn indoors. Hair colours should be natural.

Additionally, PE uniform should only be worn on days when Middle School students have a PE or Sport class. Wearing the PE uniform on non-PE days does not align with our uniform guidelines. For Senior School students, PE uniform is only to be worn on designated PE practical days, not every day students have PE. Colder weather in the winter terms does not permit students to wear the PE uniform as an alternative to the formal school uniform.

We kindly ask that families take the opportunity over the school holidays to review their student’s uniform items to ensure they have the correct school uniform. Please prepare adequately for the cooler months ahead and if necessary, purchase winter uniform items accordingly. Middle School students have been reminded of this expectation during their Term 1 Values Assemblies and during classroom visits by their Year Level Coordinators, where consequences for being out of uniform next term and for the remainder of the year were reiterated. Students should expect to be issued a lunch time detention if they are not in the correct school uniform. Senior School students have been reminded through Year Level Coordinator communication and classroom teacher conversations and reminders. We ask that parents and carers support students in being in correct school uniform. Should families require support with uniform items, please reach out the Year Level Coordinators.

College Uniform

For Term 2 and Term 3 only, please refer to the Winter Uniform requirements.
The expectation is for students to wear the dress and shorts only in Term 1 and 4 and the Winter skirts are for Winter Term 2 and 3.
Shorts and Pants must be tailored and Navy.

Year 12 Formal

After an intensive period of SACs, students finally had the opportunity to relax, celebrate, and enjoy an evening with friends at the Year 12 Formal, held at The Grand on Princess on 18 June. The event brought the cohort together for a memorable night of dressing up, dancing, and enjoying a delicious three-course meal.

The atmosphere was vibrant throughout the evening as the DJ played a mix of current hits and nostalgic throwback tracks, drawing students to the dance floor. The photobooth was also a popular attraction, capturing countless memories shared between friends and teachers alike. It was wonderful to see the entire cohort come together and celebrate the year so far.

A special thank you goes to the coordinators, Ms Barresi, staff, and the Formal Committee, whose hard work and dedication helped make the evening such a memorable and magical occasion.

If families have any questions about this, they should contact Year Level Coordinators for advice prior to purchasing.

ELC Graduation

The ELC Graduation ceremony was held last Friday and what a special group of international students they are! Representing a diverse group of countries including Vietnam, Cambodia, China and Korea, all of the students have not only worked so hard over the past 6 months, but the teachers could not stop emphasising how lovely they were as a group to teach! Displaying such values as respect for school, willingness to learn and curiosity about Australian culture this group is already bringing a sense of intercultural connectedness. We look forward to observing the rest of their education journey at EDSC 😊

What to do if a student is injured or sick at school

East Doncaster Secondary College has a dedicated Sick Bay which is located in the main Administration Building. It is there to service the needs of both students and staff. If a student requires medical attention during class time, that student will be sent by their teacher to the Sick Bay accompanied by another student (who will be sent back to class immediately). We will then assess the student and determine a course of action. If necessary, we will contact a parent or an emergency contact to provide them with the relevant details.

Students are NOT to contact their parent(s) by phone or text message before coming to the Sick Bay.

This causes undue stress for parents or carers, who understandably want to know the specifics about their child’s condition. We can assure parents that if their child is sick or injured and requires further intervention, they will be contacted. If a student is not feeling well or is injured, they are to come directly to Sick Bay.

Students are NOT to take it upon themselves to ask their parents to collect them from school.

Students are NOT permitted to walk, cycle, catch public transport or arrange for a ride home from school if they are injured or sick at school.

Tree Planting – with Interact Club and Rotary

As a part of my Duke of Edinburgh volunteering category, my goal was to help increase the participation in the annual Rotary tree planting day. With the help of Mr Bourke, Ms Ruderman, Daryl and Ian from Rotary, Ms Lewington and student helpers the day was a complete success. We started our day around 7 o’clock driving around two hours north to Glenaroua Homestead a 7,000 acre working sheep farm. We were joined by Manningham Scouts, Rotary, Landcare and the Pajero club, in total there were over 200 volunteers. We all worked tirelessly to plant 3000 native trees throughout the property ensuring a wide range of diversity to last for generations to come.

We enjoyed a wonderful morning tea and lunch put on by Rotary. A fortunate surprise was to be ferried around the large property by the Pajero 4WD club, giving us access to the property that we were unable to walk ourselves. It was a great way to see the beautiful running river lined with century old Australian gums.

My goal for the day was for students to be able help with a wonderful cause and be able to interact with new people, and it safe to say the goal was achieved. Overall, everyone demonstrated the EDSC values, which made the day even better.

Dante Alighieri Poetry Recitation Competition 2026 Finalists announced

On Monday 1 June, a group of 47 of students from Years 9-12 participated in the Dante Alighieri Poetry Recitation Competition 2026 at the University of Melbourne.

The day started with a meeting at Piazza Italia on Lygon Street, Carlton. Students were then escorted to the Arts Building at the University of Melbourne. For many, particularly the year 9s, it was the first time to walk through the cloister walkway in the Old Quadrangle. For many of our year 12 students it was their 4th and last, as entrants of the competition.

Students sat in the lecture theatre waiting to be called to where the judge would hear their recitation of their chosen poem.

Once all done, students returned to Piazza Italia to commence their Caccia al Tesoro di Via Lygon (treasure hunt) which took them to the icons of Lygon Street.

The day turned grey, but despite this, students continued to search for answers, taking the time to check out the many cafes and restaurants for a bite to eat or a hot chocolate.

The college is proud to announce that seven students have been selected to go on to the next level.  We would like to take the opportunity to congratulate our 7 finalists who will go onto to the finals next term, on Tuesday 14 July.

2026 EDSC Bookmark Competition now open

Our annual EDSC Library Bookmark Design Competition is now open! Entries close on Friday August 7.

This year students’ designs must respond to the Book Week theme ‘Symphony of Stories’. Students and staff will vote for their favourite bookmark, and the winning design will be professionally printed and provided free to students in the Library. The winner will also receive a $20 book voucher.

Designs should be emailed to 7773-library@schools.vic.edu.au by the end of Friday August 7.

Each student can enter one handmade or digital design following these rules:

  • Your bookmark must be sized 206mm x 56mm.
  • Your background should go right to the edges. Any text or important graphics need 3mm of ‘bleed’ space at the edge (they should fit inside the size 200mm x 50mm).
  • We recommend not including a border in your design as this can be affected when printing.
  • Digital designs should be 300dpi. You can use these digital templates for guidance if you like (scroll down to ‘Bookmarks’ and select templates from the first row).
  • Handmade designs can be photographed or scanned and emailed, and if they win, we will organise a high-quality scan of the artwork for printing.
  • Designs must be your own work (and not AI generated).
  • Designs must be one sided only. You may sign your name on the design if you like.
  • Designs must include ‘EDSC Reads 2026’ somewhere.
  • Designs must respond to the theme ‘Symphony of Stories’. These words do not need to appear in your design, and you can interpret this broad theme however you wish.

Respectful Relationship News

What is Respectful Relationships?

Respectful Relationships education is a core component of the Victorian Curriculum from foundation to year 12. It is all about embedding a culture of respect and equality across the entire school community.

The Respectful Relationships program supports schools and early childhood settings to promote and model respect, positive attitudes and behaviours. It teaches our children how to build healthy relationships, resilience and confidence.

While many different strategies are needed to contribute to this population-wide approach, the Respectful Relationships initiative is a key example of successful primary prevention work to prevent gender-based violence in education settings.

Schools are unique as a setting in which primary prevention, early intervention, response and recovery operate alongside and in connection with one another. To be effective, Respectful Relationships must take a whole-of-school approach that works with leadership, systems and practices to support positive school cultures, age-appropriate curriculum delivery, policy development and community engagement.

What is taught in the Secondary Years?

Respectful Relationships in the secondary years focuses on treating everyone with respect and dignity and teaches students about the relationship between gender and power.

The RRRR teaching and learning resources provide tailored materials for years 7 to 12, including age-appropriate lesson plans and activities that help students learn new skills and build empathy, confidence and resilience.

What are the benefits of students learning about Respectful Relationships?

We know that a good education is about more than simply getting good marks. It is about supporting children to become contributing members of our communities, with productive and healthy adult lives.

Evidence shows that respectful relationships education:

  • helps to equip children with the skills to communicate positively and respectfully, build positive relationships and challenge stereotypes that don’t support equality.
  • positively impacts academic outcomes, mental health, classroom behaviour and student-teacher relationships (Our Watch, 2016).

Everyone in our community deserves to be respected, valued and treated equally. We know that changes in attitudes and behaviours can be achieved when positive attitudes, behaviours and equality are embedded in our education settings.

Respectful Relationships is about embedding a culture of respect and equality across our entire community, from our classrooms to staffrooms, sporting fields, fetes and social events. This approach leads to positive impacts on students’ academic outcomes, their mental health, classroom behaviour, and relationships between teachers and students.

Together, we can lead the way in saying yes to respect and equality and creating genuine and lasting change so that every child has the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

Take Flight! Aerospace Engineering Incursion

On the 12 June, year 7 and 8 students had the opportunity to participate in an exciting CSIRO STEM Professional Aerospace incursion, where they explored the science behind flight in a fun and hands-on way. Throughout the session, with help from Eranga and Oneli, students learned about how gliders work and how different design features can affect the way an aircraft moves through the air. Using simple materials such as wood, cardstock and other basic supplies, students were able to construct their own gliders and test them in a practical setting. This allowed them to see how ideas from science and engineering can be applied to real-world design challenges.

The activity encouraged students to think creatively and problem-solve as they challenged themselves to design new planes from scratch. They experimented with different shapes, sizes and structures in order to optimise distance, range and stability. Many students made adjustments to their designs after testing, showing critical thinking and curiosity as they worked to improve their results. Overall, the incursion was highly engaging and enjoyable, with students having fun during the lesson, working well with the instructors and developing a stronger interest in aerospace design. It was a fantastic experience and is definitely recommended for future students. Huge thanks to Eranga and Oneli for their time.

Video Game Design Incursion – Banyule Nillumbik Tech School

The Video Game Design Incursion gave us a new appreciation for the planning, teamwork and creativity involved in developing a video game. From learning about robotics, coding and electronic circuits to designing and programming our own game, every stage played an important role. The highlight was seeing all of our individual contributions come together to create a fully playable game, an experience we wish we had even more time to explore.

Joyce & Ee Lynn – 7M

Designing a video game allowed me to experience the complete game development process while applying STEM concepts in a practical way. I particularly enjoyed using my understanding of physics to simulate realistic trajectories and seeing those ideas come to life through coding. The incursion has inspired me to continue exploring programming and game development.

Leo – 7M

The Video Game Design Incursion encouraged us to think creatively, collaborate effectively and persevere through challenges. Learning to use a range of digital design tools while overcoming coding obstacles made the final product even more rewarding. Watching our ideas transform into a playable game was both exciting and memorable.

Felix – 7M

The Video Game Design Incursion challenged me to think like a real game developer by experimenting with different ideas, solving problems and refining solutions. The most rewarding moment was overcoming complex challenges and seeing my ideas work successfully, which strengthened my confidence and problem-solving skills. It was an engaging experience that encouraged creative thinking, resilience and a growth mindset.

Introduction to Robocup

On 4 June, several of the STEM Captains were fortunate to attend a full-day robotics workshop led by David Ebert from RoboCup. Throughout the day, Ellie, Ken, Theviru and I learned how to code robots and even build our own.

This workshop marked the first step in what we hope will become a robotics club at our school.

As a complete beginner, I found the experience both fascinating and challenging, and it sparked my interest in robotics and programming. We are excited to share what we learned and explore future opportunities for students to become involved in robotics.

EDSC – Takes the Plunge for FightMND

EDSC proudly joined the fight against Motor neurone disease (MND) this year by hosting our own Big Freeze fundraising event on Tuesday 23 June. Through a combination of fundraising activities and community support the event was an outstanding success, raising $7267.60 for FightMND. The generosity of our school community helped us surpass our original $5000 fundraising goal, with all proceeds going directly towards vital MND research and support services.

One of the day’s highlights was the Ice Bucket Challenge, where our courageous volunteers: Ms Arkan, Mr Lau, Lina – 9B, Atrisa – 7E, Lola – 12V and Mr Campbell braved the freezing water for a great cause. Jordan – 12C was unable to take part due to competing in interschool sport, each volunteer shared a powerful personal reflection on why this day and its cause were so important to them.

We were honoured to welcome guest speakers Ayman, Raelene and Trisha from MND. Ayman shared his insights into the challenges faced by those living with motor neurone disease, reminding us all of the importance of supporting research, advocacy efforts and reinforcing the difference our fundraising can make.

Our free dress students generously donated their gold coins to participate. Thanks go to the following students who helped with various aspects of the event ranging from the planning of the Ice Bucket challenge, selling of raffle tickets and merchandise and on event day: Badie – 12, Lina – 9, Yixin – 10, Myrah – 8, Chloe – 9, Aaryan – 9, Dev – 9, Zara – 8, Taylor – 12, Harris – 12, Lincoln – 9, Rio – 9, Salma – 12, Sangya – 10, Rhylan – 11, Chloe – 10 and Xavier – 12. A big thank you to Ms James for organising the event, selling raffle tickets and merchandise. A shout out to Mrs Kinsman who gave up her lunchtimes to provide card payments for staff and students.

Raffle Prize winners

  • 1st  Prize – Chuck – 7P
  • 2nd Prize – Amelia – 9N
  • 3rd Prize – Ms Murray

We thank Rotary Club for putting on a tasty barbecue, which proved popular for all wanting a special lunch time bite, contributing significantly to our fundraising total.

Combined with donations received through our official FightMND fundraising page, merchandise sales and raffle ticket purchases, the event demonstrated the incredible generosity and community spirit of East Doncaster Secondary College.

A sincere thank you goes to all students, staff, families, and community members who donated, purchased merchandise, volunteered their time, attended the event or participated in the Ice Bucket Challenge. We are incredibly proud of the compassion, enthusiasm, and commitment shown by our school community and thank everyone who helped make the event such a meaningful and successful fundraiser.

Together, we have made a real difference in the fight against motor neurone disease.
