East Doncaster Secondary College is thrilled to announce that one of its Year 12 students, Samantha Chim, has had her short documentary film titled ‘Break the Mould’ selected for the prestigious Top Screen film festival.

The festival, which is a selection of the best films from VCE Media students in Victoria, Australia, is an initiative of the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) and is run in partnership with the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI). It aims to recognise and celebrate the achievements of talented young filmmakers and to provide them with an opportunity to showcase their work to a wider audience.

The festival is open to all students who have completed a VCE Media course in Victoria, and films are eligible for selection if they have been completed as part of a student’s VCE Media studies. A panel of industry professionals and educators are responsible for selecting the films that will be featured in the festival, and the selection process is based on the quality of the film and its relevance to the VCE Media curriculum.

Samantha’s documentary explores the challenge of being a transgender person in today’s society, through the story of transgender activist Rora Mac. The film is a powerful and thought-provoking exploration of an important topic, and the College is incredibly proud of Samantha’s work.

Samantha is a hardworking, perceptive and talented student with a keen interest in social issues. She has studied Media since Year 9, and her work has always been thoughtful and well-considered. Being selected for Top Screen is a significant achievement, and East Doncaster Secondary College is honoured to have another student recognised in this way.

Samantha is the fifth student from East Doncaster Secondary College to be selected for Top Screen, following in the footsteps of Jenna Tang, ‘Kristen’; Daniel Chau ‘Surreal’; Lize Myburgh ‘A Ball of Clay’; Chris Lecknik, ‘Fingerprints’. The College is incredibly proud of Samantha, and all of its past students, for their contributions to the world of Media and for the impact their films have had.

East Doncaster Secondary College looks forward to seeing what the future holds for Samantha, and all of its talented Media students. The College invites all to join in congratulating Samantha on this incredible achievement, and to look forward to seeing her film at Top Screen.
