Principal’s Report
Staffing
There have been some changes to staffing this term. Mr Johnston has taken Long Service Leave, and unfortunately the teacher appointed to replace him accepted another appointment overseas. However, we now have staff in place for these classes – Mrs W. Maurer for the English classes, and Mr B. Timms for the Physical Education classes.
Mr R. Berry will be taking leave for the remainder of this term. His VCE Information Technology class will be taken by Mrs J. Neilly, and his Geography/History classes taken by Mrs J. Smith.
Mrs F. Howie will take on Mr Berry’s Year 12 Co-ordination responsibilities, and Mr J. Maher will move into the VCE team to work with Miss H. Dimitriadis as Year 11 Co-ordinator. Mr S. Hoffman will take over as Curriculum Co-ordinator.
All these staff have extensive experience, and the changes have been structured in such as way as to ensure that the minimum number of classes are affected. It is pleasing that at East Doncaster Secondary College our leadership team is willing to accept, where possible, additional short-term responsibilities to ensure that the teaching program is not disrupted.
We also welcome to the college several new Instrumental Music teachers – Ms K. Rule (saxophone), Ms C. Morris (flute) and Mr S. Vertigan (clarinet).
Finally, we welcome Ms J. Beckman to our Science Faculty as a Laboratory Assistant. She will be working with Mr C Murdoch, whose workload has increased over the last few years as the number of students at the college has grown.
Guys and Dolls
Performances of the college musical Guys and Dolls, have now begun. It is always a delight to see the hard work put in by staff, students and parents bear fruit in the form of a wonderful night’s entertainment. It is also pleasing to see the large numbers in the audience for this show. There will be a full report on the show in our next newsletter.

Next Tuesday we are holding our annual Information Evening for parents and students who wish to enrol in the college in 2004 and beyond. There will be a display of student work, and presentations by staff, a student and a parent. A tour of the college is to be held the following Tuesday 20th May. Visitors will have an opportunity to view our facilities and to see some of the students at work.
Our local feeder primary schools have been visited and invitations delivered to all students in Grades 4, 5 and 6; however, if you know of any one who is still making decisions about secondary schooling, please encourage them to attend either or both our Information Evening and our College Tour.
For those unable to attend either of these, tours of the college are available during the day – contact the college for details of times when these are run.
Sympathies
It is with deep sadness that I report the tragic death of Mr Greg Adams, (father of Chloe in Year 7). Mr Adams was a passenger in a vehicle which struck a tree and caught fire on Easter Sunday.
I would like to extend the sympathies of the whole college to the family during this difficult time.

VCE - Changes to Special Provision
This year the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) has changed how provision is given to students who become ill or experience personal hardship at the time of their VCE assessments. This applies to all students doing VCE subjects.
A brochure which clearly outlines details of how special provision will operate in 2003 will be distributed to VCE students with this newsletter. Please read it carefully with your son or daughter. Contact the college if you believe there is a case for Special Provision to be considered for your son or daughter or if you have any queries relating to this brochure.
Queries should be directed to Mrs. Macmillan Year 12 coordinator.
The VCE Coordination Team:
Mr. R. Berry, Mrs. T. Macmillan, Miss H. Dimitriadis, Mrs. Howie.
Managed Individual Pathways
Managed Individual Pathways (MIPs) in secondary schools follows a recommendation from a review of post compulsory education and training pathways. The College has received funding to assist senior students to develop an Individual Pathway, a personalized plan to achieve their future goals in education and careers. The development of individual plans has been undertaken for the previous two years in this College and will again continue this year. This will involve all Year 10 students.
Each student will complete a survey detailing his or her work experience, interests and aptitudes. This will be followed by a 30 minute interview with a career counsellor from KYM Youth Services, which specializes in developing Individual Pathways. The College will pay students’ costs. Interviews will be conducted during school days and will commence in early May.
The Pathways program is part of our comprehensive careers and course counselling program which is conducted in Year 10 Commerce and with the Careers and Work Experience Coordinators.
For any further information please contact Mr. Roberts or Mrs. Black (Careers Coordinator) at the College.

Year 10 Fieldtrip
On the 7th April the two Year 10 Art classes went on a fieldtrip to Federation Square. Our aim was not only to visit the exhibitions but also to understand and learn new techniques in creating Art.
In doing this we saw the exhibitions Top Arts – VCE Awards, Technocraft, Metal works, First Impressions, Photography and M.I.L.K. – Moments, Intimacy, Laughter, Kinship, a photography exhibition set up on the banks of the Yarra.
The exhibitions were inspiring, realistic and showed great character and emotion.
Of all the works, some interesting and unusual techniques we encountered were oil on composition board, metallic gold leaf on paper, wax on canvas, miscellaneous objects and oil paint on metal. These were all very fascinating and it was also excellent to see the student sketches and their inspirations before they made the final product.
Lunch was at Southbank and afterwards we stopped along the Yarra and our class drew observational drawings of people passing, whereas the other class drew buildings and the skyline of the city.
Federation Square is a place of Australian culture with many different creations complimenting our heritage and showcasing many new and well-known Australian artists. The building is an artwork in itself with its creative and abstract architectural design. It stands out and is definitely worth seeing!

Year 10 Work Experience
(Mon 8 Sept – 19 Sept – last 2 weeks of Term 3)
Students are reminded that all work experience forms are due in to the Work Experience Coordinator by Friday, 23 May. The placements will then be confirmed in writing with the student and the employer by the coordinator.
Work Experience is compulsory and forms part of the semester unit, Commerce. Students will be required to complete an assignment on their experiences in a work environment. This will be submitted and assessed in Term 4. Consequently, those students who completed Commerce in Semester One will therefore receive their Commerce report at the end of the year.
Students should attempt to seek work experience in line with their career interests (although this is not always possible). Such experience can be valuable in gaining access to a particular occupation and/or course in the future.
Finally, if any student is experiencing difficulty securing a placement, they should make an appointment with the Work Experience Coordinator to discuss the matter.
Mrs S. Kennedy
Work Experience Coordinator
Music Camp - Candlebark Farm
Healesville 7 - 9 April, 2003
This year 49 instrumental music students from the Concert Band, String Group and Stageband attended the three day – two night music camp at Candlebark Farm in Healesville.
It was a busy time for the music department with the camp coming at the same time as preparations for the school musical production, the opening of the Landy Centre and the resumption of the normal music programs for 2003. Many thanks must go to an excellent team of teachers Mr Williams, Mrs Marchant, Mr Setchell, Mrs da Silva and Ms Mason who stayed full time at the camp and to the visiting teachers, Mr Madden, Mr Smith and Mr Vertigan.
We were also very lucky to have two visiting string teachers; Kerryn Coulter and Karen Kyriakou who tutored the string students.
The late afternoons and evenings were taken up with social activities that included riding the 500 metre flying fox and evening sessions of Red Faces and a music trivia quiz to rival any of the TV quiz shows, thanks to Mr Setchell.
Time at the camp was very productive, working on new music for the year as well as strengthening the social ties between instrumental music students of differing ensembles. This year students learnt more music than previous years, which is testament to the improving skills of our students. In addition to their ensemble pieces, students learnt the Hallelujah Chorus by Handel and Symphony No. 1 by Mahler as combined String Group and Concert Band numbers – a great sound it was too, a symphony orchestra of 49 players! Vocalists Anastasia Giannakis and Sam Godwin, under the direction of Mrs Marchant, were very successfully introduced into the Stageband line-up and have increased the repertoire of the Stageband with their well-blended vocals on a number of soul and funk tunes.
Many thanks to all parents for your support and for those who attended the concert and lunch at the campsite on the last day, it was very important to staff to have your support. The biggest thanks goes to the hard working students who attended the camp, a great bunch to spend fifty-something hours with!
Mr N. Grimmett
Director of Music

Welcome to our Italian Assistant
We would like to welcome Alice Simone to the college. Alice arrived from Milano last week thanks to a joint initiative from the Education Department, the Catholic Education Office, and Co. As.It.
We are very fortunate to have Alice with us, as there were only 6 assistants available for all of Victoria. She will assist Italian staff and students with all things Italian and no doubt we will all benefit by her presence.
